Notification of New Chemicals in Australia

AICIS – the Australian Industrial Chemicals Introduction Scheme

From July 2020, industrial chemicals in Australia are regulated by the Australian Industrial Chemicals Introduction Scheme (AICIS) as established by the Industrial Chemicals Act (IC Act 2019). Alongside its general focus on the protection of people and the environment, AICIS aims to make regulatory procedures more proportionate to risk and facilitate safer innovation through the introduction of lower risk chemicals. The IC Act 2019 provides for the transition from the old to the new scheme. The transition is stipulated in the Industrial Chemicals (Consequential Amendments and Transitional Provisions) Act 2019.

The notification process in Australia is fairly transparent, as various guidance documents are provided on the official websites and direct communication with the responsible agency is possible. Still, there are a number of complex requirements and strategic considerations one needs to be aware of when registering new chemicals in Australia. This starts with the determination if your chemical is in scope, selecting the right category for new chemical assessment, i.e. permit or certificate assessment, and ends with the choice of the appropriate notification strategy (e.g. limited or standard). SCC helps you to develop an effective strategy, best fitted to your needs, and obtain a successful notification in Australia.
